Opening Day for a Winning Team

by SandMan on April 1, 2011

What a great day! Today was the official kick off to our attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Tallest Sandcastle while raising money for several charities. We began with a snow-covered site (nice April Fool’s joke, Mother Nature – you tried to storm the castle and failed), and concluded with the first official bucket of sand being added to the base of the castle.

In addition to dozens of volunteers from New Horizons and Gifts of Love, several of our sponsors were in attendance along with members of our steering committee and Nancy Nickerson from the Farmington Town Council.  Ed Jarrett organized an inaugural bucket brigade started by a group of children sitting atop a mound of sand and filling the first bucket.  The bucket was then passed from person to person around the outside of the wooden form and to a group standing inside the form, finally being dumped into the center of the base area.  There was thunderous applause and the crowd cheered!

In two months, we hope to have a sandcastle 35 feet tall (if you need a visual, the tree in the photo to the left is between 35 and 40 feet tall and the little girl standing next to it is just shy of 3.5 feet tall – that’s right, it’s going to be THAT tall – you can click on the photo to enlarge it).

Ed Jarrett and the 2010-2011 Winter/Spring snowfall totals.  They’re both record breakers.  We hope you’ll join us in setting a new record – and raising money for some incredible charities!

Photos from the day can be seen in the “Opening Day” album in our Photo Gallery.
